Icelandic horses

_D813486.jpgWe got to pet these beauties yesterday.  There are 68,000 Icelandic horses all over the country; they’re an integral part of life in Iceland.  They are friendly and tame.  They walk over and are eager to be petted.  They come in many colors and these golden ones with blond hair are my favorites!

The Huldufolk, hidden people, of Iceland

There are so many nooks and crannies for Iceland’s hidden people to live.  This is an Icelandic  moss field and you can’t help but look for the Huldufolk here.

This story of how the Huldufolk (hidden people) came to be finds Adam and Eve at home in their beautiful garden. One day, God comes to visit and asks to meet all the couple’s children. However, Eve had only finished bathing a few of her children, and was embarrassed to show her Creator the dirty ones. So she introduced the clean children and hid the others.

“Are there any children I haven’t met yet?” God asked. Eve said no.

Of course, being omniscient, God knew that he was being tricked and declared, “Those who you hide from me shall also be hidden from men.”

And so, the hidden children became invisible, taking to the hills and moors and rocks. It is from these children that the Hidden People are descended, while humankind is descended from the children whom Eve showed to God. Hidden People can only be seen by human eyes if they want to be.

Rocky like the moon!

Need to find a good photo to add of some of the very rocky landscape here.  Rocky like the moon.  The Apollo astronauts came here twice before going to the moon to learn about these rocks and this moon-like landscape!

Geo thermal area yesterday

Only 10% of this beautiful country is inhabited.

Tour guides are monitored here so they don’t put in too many hours.  There’s some device in our little bus that keeps track of how much our guide drives each day.  She must take mandatory rests.

Stubborn little Icelandic dog

image.jpgAt our B&B the other day, the owner had a little black dog much like this one.   He hurried through our open door and plopped down on our rug and settled in as if this was his room.  Bill tried coaching the dog out and the little scamp wouldn’t budge.  Bill gently pleaded with him, holding our door open and gesturing to get the little guy moving.  The dog stayed put, unmoved.  Bill headed downstairs to see if the owner would have better luck and as soon as Bill walked down a few steps our little friend got up and hurried out our door.   Later Bill said, maybe the pooch didn’t understand English, only Icelandic.  He seemed happy with that idea and I didn’t tell him how I witnessed the owner calling for the dog in Icelandic downstairs and how the dog just stayed put.  This little Icelandic dog simply does as he pleases!

On the road away from Reykjavik!

Our first waterfall…and our bus…

graham photography group–15 of us on a smallish bus…starting to take in the diverse landscape here.  Forgive the lousy shots of mine taken on the iPad– better photos to come!  Check out the Icelandic horses.  There are 68,000 Icelandic horses here in all colors black, brown, grey, golden, and they are tame and inquisitive.
